What is the APPLICATION process?

Applicants must be:

  • Between the ages of 16-18* on the start date of a cycle-or- if **15 you will turn 16 prior to the date of graduation. **AMYA Director Discretion. (Youth may turn 19 while at AMYA, as long as they are 18* on start date-Some 19 year olds may qualify for a waiver)
  • In need of your high school diploma or GED (youth that have either are NOT eligible to apply). Need extra assistance with any of our 8 core components (Academic Excellence, Job Skills, Leadership/Followership, Life Coping Skills, Health/Hygiene, Responsible Citizenship, Physical Fitness, or Service to Community).
  • A citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States. Youth must be residing in Alaska and (if under 18) have parent/guardian in Alaska.
  • Willing to be free from the illegal use of drugs or substances, alcohol, and tobacco products during the program.
  • Not under indictment, or ever convicted of a felony (or any crime that would be considered to be a felony if perpetrated by an adult), and not currently on parole or probation for other than juvenile status offenses or misdemeanors. Youth cannot have any court requirements during the 22-week residential phase.
  • Physically and mentally capable to fully participate in the program in which enrolled with reasonable accommodation for physical and other disabilities. AMYA is not a psychiatric, therapeutic program and is not appropriate for applicants who have received mental illness diagnoses where they may present a danger to themselves or others; when their situation is incompatible with a high stress, high-tempo schedule; or if they require off-campus treatment that would deprive them of full program participation. Youth with significant dietary/food allergies may not be eligible.
  • Able to communicate sufficiently with program staff to participate safely in the program.

Your assigned admissions representative will email you with request to verify the qualifications after you complete the online interest form. If you are unsure, please discuss this with your assigned staff member or email goamya@alaska.gov.

Orientations can be completed in person (Anchorage, Matsu, and Fairbanks Area) or online, via telephone, video conferencing, or through paper review. You will be provided orientation options by your assigned admissions staff AFTER you verify the qualifications.

Your admissions representative will provide you the application and instructions. Applicant/Family will be provided application packet once the online interest form is completed, qualifications have been verified, and the orientation has been completed.

The interview is scheduled after the Initial Application Packet is completed. Starting one month out from the start of a cycle, admissions will request the medical packet also be submitted with the intial application packet dut to time constraints. The confidential interview is conducted with the applicant and Admissions staff. The interview is conducted in person when geographically feasible. Interviews may also be completed via telephone or videoconferencing. An interview is REQUIRED.

Acceptance is determined following the interview. Should a youth be accepted, they will be provided a Conditional Acceptance Letter and must complete and submit the Medical Packet in order to attend. All acceptances are CONDITIONAL, should a youth not submit the medical packet or no longer meet the qualifications to attend their acceptance letter will be VOID. This may include change in legal status, medical changes, injuries, etc. The Conditional Acceptance letter will also contain information on when to report, information to obtain flights* (if outside reasonable driving distance/off road system), and the Packing List. *AMYA pays for the cost of the accepted youth's flight only. NO FLIGHTS will be made until the medical packet has been submitted.Starting one month from the start of the cycle, admissions will request the medical packet be submitted at the same time as the applicant packet, due to time constraints.

*Failure to submit the Medical Packet will result in youth being unable to attend.* In some instances, information in the medical packet may prevent the youth from attending. AMYA will provide flight transportation at NO COST to the family for the accepted youth to Anchorage for those outside reasonable driving distance and/or off the road system (NO flights will be made until the Medical Packet has been received). Families may opt to report directly to Anchorage at their own expense. Once the cycle starts the primary contact will be the platoon leader or Team Leaders Center (TLC) 428-7325.
